Wednesday's Daily News 'n Notes: Tech with big upset, state wrestling starts, new digs for Demons, and more

Wednesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Georgia Tech pulls off big upset

McCamish Pavilion was less than 70 percent full, but those on hand walked away thrilled with Georgia Tech’s 64-58 win over No. 5 Louisville.

Tech’s last top-5 win was Jan. 9, 2016 against No. 4 Virginia, 68-64.

The Yellow Jackets led from start to finish, avenging a four-point loss at Louisville about three weeks ago and gain a signature win.

GHSA state wrestling tournament set

Hundreds of wrestlers from a few hundred high schools converge on the Macon Coliseum for three days of wrestling in the GHSA state tournament.

Cost is $14 per day, with a three-day pass for $34.

Action begins at 9 a.m. with all weights and classifications. Friday’s wrestling begins at the same time with the second round of wrestlebacks, regular semifinals beginning at 2 p.m., followed by consolation quarters and semis.

The finals start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

New home, same Demons

Warner Robins won its seventh straight region title in boys basketball and is a top seed in the GHSA tournament.

Big difference: This year’s first playoff game will be Warner Robins’ first game in its brand new gym, more of a small arena, part of a $10 million building.

          Coming Thursday.
