GHSA state wrestling: Good start for Veterans, Perry, West Laurens, nearly two dozen area athletes
Nearly two dozen male Central Georgia wrestlers are still in the hunt for a state title in the GHSA state traditional tournament at the Macon Coliseum.
Veterans has the top score among area teams, and is sixth overall, with 77 points and six Warhawks in the semifinals in Class 5A, where Veterans is third.
Perry is 17th overall with 48.5 points, and has four semifinalists. The Panthers are just ahead of region rival West Laurens, which has 46 points and three semifinalists. They’re third and fifth in 4A.
Still alive to defend their 2019 titles: Veterans’ Francis Morrissey, Perry’s Austin Theil, and West Laurens’ Dre Bonner and Chase Horne. The Raiders’ Spencer Dacus was upset in the second round.
Six area girls are in semifinals.
Friday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with the second round of wrestlebacks, regular semifinals beginning at 2 p.m., followed by consolation quarters and semis.
The finals start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
