A look at GHSA playoff scenarios (updated, and with GISA)

A look at the playoff scenarios through Thursday.

Only regions where a Central Georgia team is involved in the postseason scenario.

Coaches/region secretaries should send update and any clarifications to centralgasports@gmail.com.

Region 1-6A

1. Lee County, 8-1/3-0, outright champ

2. Valdosta, 4-4/2-1

3. Northside, 4-6/1-2

4. Houston County, 5-5/0-3

All is official, since all four teams are done with the regular season.

Region 1 is matched up with Region 4 in the first round.

Region 1-5A

1. Warner Robins, 7-1/2-0, top seed

2. Ware County, 7-1/2-1

3. Coffee, 7-2/2-1

4. Wayne County, 3-6/1-2

Warner Robins wins the outright championship with a win over Veterans, but is the top seed regardless. Ware County is at Wayne County.

Region 1 is matched up with Region 4 in the first round.

Region 4-5A

1. Jones County, 6-3/6-0

2. Ola, 8-1/5-1

3. Dutchtown 6-3/5-1

4. Woodland-Stockbridge, 6-3/3-3, and Union Grove (5-4/3-3)

Dutchtown is at Jones County, so an upset there and Ola beating Locust Grove (likely) and there’s a three-way tie with Ola, Dutchtown, and Jones County. The Greyhounds beat Ola, which beat Dutchtown, so a Dutchtown win renders head-to-head moot. The tiebreaker then becomes points allowed among the tied teams. A Jones County win gives the Greyhounds the outright region title.

Region 4 is matched up with Region 1 in the first round.

Region 4-4A

1. Baldwin, 4-0/4-0, and Perry, 5-4/4-0

3. West Laurens, 4-4/3-2

4. Westside 4-4/3-2

The only things set are that Baldwin and Perry will have first-round home games regardless of the result of their region championship game Friday night, and that West Laurens and Westside are next, and those two play next week as well. Westside plays Rutland on Monday, and a Seminoles win means their game Friday against West Laurens is for third place. Region 4 is matched up with Region 1 in the first round.

Region 2-3A

1. Peach County, 7-1/6-0

2. Crisp County, 8-1/5-1

3. Central, 5-3/5-1

4. Jackson 4-4/3-3

Alive: Mary Persons, 4-5/2-4, and Upson-Lee, 4-5/2-4

The top three spots are set for seeding in that order, even with Peach County’s cancellation against Central. Crisp County’s game against Pike County has also been cancelled.

Now, about that fourth spot (with Jackson at Upson-Lee and Mary Persons hosting Americus-Sumter:

          1. Jackson is in with a win.

          2. Upson-Lee is in if it beats Jackson and gives up less than 23 points.

          3. Mary Persons is in if Upson-Lee beats Jackson and gives up 23 or more points.

The possibility of COVID leading to Peach County forfeiting the first round means, if that should happen in time over the weekend, that who is fifth suddenly matters.

In the above scenarios, Mary Persons is fifth in No. 1, Jackson is fifth in No. 2, and the winner of Upson-Lee and Jackson is fifth in No. 3.

Should Americus-Sumter pull off the upset of Mary Persons – at Dan Pitts Stadium, with the postseason on the line – well, never mind.

Region 2 is matched up with Region 3 in the first round.

Region 3-AA

1. Dodge County, 5-3/4-1, top seed

2. Northeast, 6-2/4-1

3. Washington County, 5-4/3-2

4. Bleckley County, 6-3/3-2

Dodge County is the top seed and Northeast the second seed, so both are home for the first round. Washington County beat Bleckley County to get that tiebreaker.

Lamar County is fifth (4-5/2-3), but has lost to Dodge County, Bleckley County, and Washington County, so it’s barely on the outside looking in. The Trojans welcome Northeast, and a win doesn’t change either team’s fortunes, but it would put Lamar County at .500 overall and for the region.

Southwest (COVID-related) had Thursday’s game against Bleckley County called off, as well as this week’s game against Dodge County, which is looking for a replacement game.

Region 3 is matched up with Region 2 in the first round.

Region 4-AA

1. Jefferson County, 6-2/6-0, top seed

2. Putnam County, 8-1/5-1

3. Westside-Augusta, 5-4/4-2

4. Laney, 4-4/4-2

Alive: Oglethorpe County, 3-6/3-3

First and second seeds are set, Putnam County winning any tiebreaker with Westside or Laney. Oglethorpe County plays Westside and Laney gets Jefferson County, so some action could take place for third and fourth. Jefferson County is the top seed regardless, having beaten Putnam County.

Region 4 is matched up with Region 1 in the first round.

Region 4-A/Public

1. Dublin, 8-1/7-0

2. Wilcox County, 7-2/6-1

3. Johnson County, 7-2/5-2

4. Montgomery County, 6-3/4-3

Record-wise, Dooly County (3-4/3-4) is close, but the Bobcats – who started the season late – have lost to the four teams above them in the standings.

The “best” game on Friday has Montgomery County hosting Dublin, which has locked down the top seed. Wilcox County faces 0-7/1-8 Treutlen, so … A win, and Dublin takes its ninth region title under Roger Holmes, while recording its sixth perfect region season since he took over in 2002.

Region 4 is matched up with Region 1 in the first round.

Region 5-A/Public

1. Chattahoochee County, 8-0/7-1, and Macon County, 7-1/6-0

3. Taylor County, 6-2/5-2

Alive: Manchester, 4-6/3-4, and Marion County, 3-4/2-3

Macon County hosts Chattahoochee County for the outright region title, and Taylor County is locked into third. Marion County has played two fewer region games than Manchester, which is done. Marion County visits Greenville (2-7/1-5).

Region 5 is matched up with Region 8 in the first round.

Region 7-A/Public

1. Hancock Central, 5-0/4-0

2. Warren County, 6-2/3-1

3. GMC, 5-4/2-2

4. Wilkinson County, 2-5/2-2

Alive: ACE, 2-6/1-3

The top two seeds are set, Hancock Central needing to beat winless Crawford County for the outright region title. GMC hosts ACE and Wilkinson County welcomes Warren County, so there’s a shot at a three-way tie for two spots with GMC, Wilkinson County, and ACE. If that happens, the tiebreaking tiebreaker is records against Class A competition.

Region 7 is matched up with Region 6 in the first round.

Region 1-A/Private

1. FPD, 5-4/3-1

2. Mount de Sales, 6-4/4-1

3. Stratford, 6-2/3-1

4. Tattnall, 4-6/2-3

The field is set, but the seedings are still iffy. FPD and Stratford play out-of-the-playoffs teams next, the Vikings at Strong Rock and the Eagles hosting Deerfield-Windsor.

Mount de Sales won Thursday. Tiebreaker is fewest points allowed among tied teams with a max of 16. So if things hold Friday, the above order remains intact.

Region 1 is matched up with Region 4 in the first round.

GISA

A seeding committee meets on Saturday to go over MaxPreps rankings and determine the top eight teams.

In Class AAA, area locks are John Milledge and Westfield, with Brentwood, Gatewood, and Piedmont locks in AA.
