GHSA Region 1-6A all-region softball team

Houston County won the region, and the all-region team indicates why.

The Bears put four on the first team and four on the second team, shared the top pitcher honor while taking player and coach of the year.

Northside finished second, and also had eight players selection.

Averi Martin was picked as player of the year, while Ally Fleming was co-pitcher of the year with Lee County’s Haley Ross. And Scott Lamb earned coach of the year honors.

Houston County first-teamers: Infielders Kendall Huelsman, Bobbi Poff, and Makayla Krepps, and outfielder Alice Thomas. Second-teamers: outfielders Elena Olson and Jocelyn Ross, catcher Abbie Havard and DP Kaylee Wilson.

Northside first-teamers: pitcher Kylee Ussery, infielder Amya Smith, outfielder Celena Luna, and catcher Madelyne Lee. Second-teamers: Infielders Riley Mitchell, Sierra Fransioli, and Audra Carroll, and outfielder Casey Ruffin.

Houston County’s season ended Tuesday in the 6A quarterfinals, the senior class having won 95 games with three Elite 8 trips and a region championship.

Rutland-Westside postponed

A COVID test has hit Bibb County football, as per a Tuesday morning announcement.

"The Rutland vs. Westside football game this Friday night has been canceled. Rutland’s football team has been quarantined following one positive COVID-19 case. They will return to practice on Wednesday, November 4th."

Northeast hosts Bleckley County at Henderson Stadium on Thursday, with Baldwin and Howard at Henderson on Friday, and Southwest at Washington County. Central is off.

Mercer preparing for lone fall home football game

The weather looks to be mighty good for the lone home game of the fall, as well as homecoming, and that’s the case for Mercer’s game Saturday against Abilene Christian.

The Bears are 0-2 after losing to Jacksonville State and Army.

Normal COVID distancing guidelines will be in place, and capacity will be limited to 25 percent. Permanent seating at Five Star Stadium is about 7,600, with a listed facility capacity of 10,200.

Prepackaged concessions will be available.
