Jake Fromm: Farewell

The final game of Jake Fromm’s junior year at Georgia was a pretty good one.

Turns out it was the final game of Jake Fromm’s career at Georgia.

The Houston County grad ended the suspense Wednesday afternoon by announcing his decision to leave for the NFL Draft.

Fromm had taken some heat in 2019 for uncharacteristic passing numbers, with five straight games below 50 percent completion rate, and more games below 200 yards than over, including a nine-completion, 35-yard outing against Kentucky in poor weather.

The longest pass of his junior year was 60 yards against Arkansas State.

His finale: 20 of 30 for 250 yards and two touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl win over Baylor.

Fromm went 35-7 as a starter, 13-6 vs. Top-25 teams, and is second at UGA with 78 touchdown passes and fourth with 8,224 yards.

A record-setter at Houston County, Fromm initially committed to Alabama, in part because Georgia didn’t recruit him much. When Kirby Smart took over, that changed, and so did Fromm’s mind.

Georgia rode a run-first priority all three years, and Fromm never seemed to be unleashed as other elite quarterbacks in the SEC racked up big numbers.

Despite a conservative offensive philosophy all three years and an overall mediocre, injured, and inexperienced receiving corps his final year, Fromm ranks respectably in most passing stats at Georgia.

At 6-2 and 220 pounds, draft observers have been mixed on his pro potential, raving about his knowledge and leadership. Some have questioned his arm strength, and wonder how much his size may be a detriment in the eyes of NFL teams.

How much Fromm could have increased his stock with another year was a debate, but with a still iffy receiving group plus a number of offensive linemen leaving early, Georgia’s offense looked to be in a notable rebuilding mode.

Fromm leaves, however, as one of the most popular and respected Bulldogs in years.
