Furman 45, Mercer 10
The hosts marched out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and 28-10 at halftime, and then No. 15 Furman’s defense tightened up to shut out Mercer in the second half for the bit Southern Conference win.
The Paladins rolled up 410 rushing yards, the most since 2003, 278 in the second half. Eight different players carried, led by Devin Wynn’s 99 yards. Corey Watkins added 97 yards, 83 coming on a third-quarter run, Furman’s longest since 2012.
Furman’s defense held Mercer to 283 yards in total offense, almost 150 yards below the Bears’ average.
It took Furman four plays to go 79 yards to score on its first possession.
David Durden scored on an 8-yard pass from Robert Riddle a minute into the second quarter, and then Caleb Dowden ended the half with a 35-yard field goal for the Bears, 2-2 and 101.
The Bears host Campbell in a week at 7 p.m.
FVSU 30, Shorter 23
Slade Jarman passed for 297 yards and two touchdowns – one to Veterans grad Jaylen Lowder - to lead FVSU to its first win.
The Wildcats (1-2) took a measure of control over the Gulf South Conference that started in 2005 with a 20-6 second quarter after trailing 13-3 on an early-season senior day.
Lowder ran four times for 10 yards and caught two passes for 22 yards and a score.
Peach County grad Ethan Manns led Shorter (0-3) with seven tackles, one for loss.
Kennesaw State 35, Missouri State 24
The Owls started so-so, trailing for 27 minutes, then got rolling en route to 479 rushing yards and an 11-point road win.
Down 16-7 at halftime, KSU outscored the hosts 28-8 in the second half. Isaac Foster scored on runs of 75 in the second quarter and then 67 yard 19 seconds into the third quarter. Bronson Rechstener ran for a career high 221 yards while Foster added 183.
KSU averaged 10.1 yards a play and held MSU to 4.8.
Texas State 37, Georgia State 34, 3 OT
A big defensive play followed a big offensive play and the result was Texas State nipping Georgia State in wild Sun Belt action.
Texas State won a conference game at home for the first time since 2015, overcoming four Georgia State leads.
