HSFB 2019: Who’s going to win this week’s football games?

HSFB 2019: Who’s going to win this week’s football games?

Last week: 19-10

Season: 95-26, 78.5 pct.

Within 7 points of margin: 6; 21 for the season

Upset specials: None picked.

Games of the week
Central vs. Northeast, Thompson

The Chargers are scoring a little more, but they’ve given up 42 more points through three games. And the Raiders, thanks to last week’s eyebrow-raiser over Manchester, have scored 32 more points while giving up only more.

TSR pick: Northeast by 17

Dodge County at Fitzgerald

Dodge County is rarely 1-2. Dodge County rarely gives up an average of 40.3 points in a three-game span. Dodge County rarely loses three games in a row. Fitzgerald is off a game it was extremely fortunate to win.

TSR pick: Dodge County by 4

Dublin at Brooks County

Brooks County is trying to avoid its worst start since 0-4 in 2007, and worst under Maurice Freeman. That was also the last time the Trojans lost more than three games. Dublin’s likely to be a little rusty early before pulling away.

TSR pick: Dublin by 21

Griffin at Upson-Lee

The Knights snatched defeat from the jaws of victory last week. The Bears have given up 12 points in three games, showing a whole lot better defense than a year ago. Can the Knights rebound again?

TSR pick: Griffin by 14

Peach County at Mary Persons

It’s hard to think that Mary Persons will get thumped at home. Hard, because when was the last time anybody thought that was a possibility? But the Bulldogs are rebuilding, yet finding a few ways to win. Peach County? The Trojans stumbled last week, and it’s a safe bet practice didn’t have much music and bubble gum. Peach County just has too much of everything, and this has strong potential for a running clock.

TSR pick: Peach County by 26

Swainsboro at Washington County

The Golden Hawks are on a five-game winning streak over the Tigers, and have won eight of nine dating back to 2001. This won’t be easy, but it won’t be as tough as last year’s 47-45 Golden Hawks win.

TSR pick: Washington County by 16

Worth County at Rutland (Thursday)

Rutland was Worth County’s lone win last year, 22-16. The Rams already have a win, over reeling Dooly County. Rutland is on a two-game scoreless streak, which hasn’t happened since a three-game scoreless run in 2009. The good news is the Hurricanes won’t repeat that.

TSR pick: Rutland by 3

Veterans at Houston County

The Warhawks found a few ways to let a road win slip away at Statesboro, while the Bears found a few ways to gut out an upset of Peach County. Conventional wisdom says the Warhawks will be sharper and grumpier, and the Bears a little flat. This is kind of a must-win mentally for Houston County to prove it’s not a fluke and should be taken seriously for more than one game. The Bears are suddenly in the middle of the state’s polls, a feeling none of these players have ever had. And Veterans can get on the fringe of a ranking with a win. Should be a snug and loud night.

TSR pick: Houston County by 19

Warner Robins at Colquitt County

Another team you really don’t want to play this week is Colquitt County, which had a six-game winning streak against Valdosta broken last week in a 50-49 loss, the Packers barely missing a 41-yard field goal try in the final seconds. The Packers aren’t going to lose two straight games to lower-classification teams, even if one is No. 1 and the other is in the top 5. The Demons have to be much sharper to make this a real four-quarter game.

TSR pick: Colquitt County by 24.
