Sunday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Falcons hold on to nip Eagles

Julio Jones caught two TD passes, the biggest coming a fourth-down short pass/long run 54-yarder with 2:10 left in the game to lift Atlanta to a 24-20 win over Philadelphia.

Matt Ryan threw three interceptions and won, and Carson Wentz threw two and almost brought the Eagles back. Two dropped passes preceded Zach Ertz coming up less than a foot short on fourth down to seal it for Atlanta.

The teams combined for all of 106 rushing yards, a long of five yards for Philadelphia and only one double-digit gain for Atlanta.

The Eagles took a 20-17 lead n Wentz’s 1-yard run and then the conversion pass to Ertz with 3:13 left in the game.

Three schools get TD Club honors; Georgia Tech assistant to speak

Georgia Tech assistant head coach Brent Key is the featured speaker at Monday’s Macon Touchdown Club meeting.

Players from Central, Howard, and Southwest will be honored.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members, who needn't be accompanied by a member.

Key is a Georgia Tech alum, having earned All-ACC honors as a senior guard in 2000, graduating a year later. His career started as a grad assistant with the Yellow Jackets, followed by a year at Western Carolina.

Key then coached a variety of spots at Central Florida from 2005-2015 before moving to Alabama from 2016-18. He joined new head coach Geoff Collins’ staff as assistant head coach, run-game coordinator, and offensive line coach.

Around/About Central Georgia

Henley finishes under par at Greenbrier

Russell Henley was in contention after three rounds of the Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, shooting 8-under.

Butt Joaquin Niemann was in control of the course and the tournament and ran away with it to win by six strokes with a 21-under 259 in the PGA’s first tournament of the season.

Henley had a rougher final round with a 3-over 73 to finish tied for 57th.

All but two of the 67 golfers who made the cut shot below par.

A triple-bogey on No. 6 followed a bogey on No. 5 to ruin Henley’s round on Sunday, a round with one two birdies and another bogey. Henley was bogey free on Friday, and countered two Thursday bogeys with a double eagle.

Braves Report

Perhaps tired delivering the constant beatings, Atlanta’s offense and pitching struggled and the Braves lost 7-0 to Washington.

And the Braves received the bad news that Charlie Culberson is done for the season, although the damage wasn’t as bad as initially appearing.
