Tuesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
The Royals haaaad a Central Georgian, but Gore is now …
No doubt Terrance Gore was eyeing this week on the schedule for a long time. After all, it’s rare that he played within two hours of home, Jones County.
Then Kansas City, in Atlanta Tuesday and Wednesday, designated him for assignment on July 12, ostensibly ending his K.C. career.
And a week ago, the Yankees picked him up for cash, $100,000.
Gore was hitting .275 with 13 steals and 58 trips to the plate in 37 games, the latter a career MLB high. He’d made a reputation for late-season stolen bases with KC and the Cubs.
He remained quasi-unemployed for about five days, New York announcing the deal on July 17.
The 28 year old was sent to the Yankees Class AAA team in Scranton-Wilkes Barre (Pa.), in northeastern Pa., about 2-1/2 hours from New York.
He is 2 for 6 in two games. Gore is likely to join the Yankees when the rosters are expanded to 40. New York leads the AL East by 9.5 games over Boston and Tampa Bay.
Big South Media Day
There was no surprise who was picked to win the league. Again.
And the Owls tied Campbell with nine all-conference picks.
Speaking of the Owls …
Braves Report
A tie became a deficit when Kansas City scored three in the eighth, which Atlanta countered with one in the bottom half.
The Braves made it mighty interesting in the ninth, but left the tie run on third in a 5-4 loss at SunTrust.
The Royals, who stranded 10, popped Anthony Swarzak – who followed Chad Sobotka in relief of Dallas Keuchel – for three on two hits, including a Lucas Duda homer, and a bases-loaded.
Dansby Swanson led off the ninth against Ian Kennedy with a single, and Freddie Freeman – who was 8-for-13 against Kennedy all-time – pushed Swanson to third with a single to right.
The increasingly warm Josh Donaldson pulled the Braves to within one with a single to left, bringing up Nick Markakis, 0 for 4 in the game and 1 for 9 against Kennedy, grounded into a fielder’s choice that KC couldn’t turn into two.
That put runners on first and third with an out for Ozzie Albies, with thousands of bobbleheads in the stands, but he popped out on the first pitch.
Austin Riley went down on three pitches.
Swanson, Freeman, Donaldson, and Albies had two hits each.
Keuchel whiffed 12 with two walks in six innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Wes Parsons, Josh Tomlin, and A.J. Minter followed Swarzak, who fell to 2-3.
