NCAA Regionals: UGA strikes early to pop Mercer, Tech strikes late to pop FAMU

          The anticipated showdown between a pair of Houston County alums didn’t develop in Athens. The anticipated blowout between a national seed and sub-.500 team took awhile to take formation. Mike Martin has at least two more games left in his storied Florida State career.

Macon wins home opener

          Florence led 4-2 after two and 4-3 through five, but Macon put up five in the sixth and four in the seventh to roll past the RedWolves 12-5 in a game with seven errors.

          Perry alum and Georgia College standout Cal Gentry had two hits and four RBI at the leadoff spot, while Middle Georgia State’s MJ Rookard went 3-for-5 with three runs right behind him. Tristan Thomas added two hits and two runs, and Tattnall grad Logan Fink two runs.

          Chance Harris got the win in four innings of relief, with seven strikeouts and three walks with only one hit.

          Macon hosts Savannah at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Braves Report

          Another struggling night by an Atlanta starter was equaled by another struggling night by Atlanta’s offense, Detroit thumping the Braves 8-2 in front of 35,000 at SunTrust.

          The Tigers tagged Mike Foltynewicz for seven hits and five runs in five innings.
