Honor Roll

          Peach Belt, NCAA, and GCAA honors for Georgia College, Mercer, and GMC are in Thursday's Daily News 'n Notes. ...

          Former Mary Persons basketball standout Cam Holden and Jacolbey Owens of Warner Robins kept it going at Gulf Coast State JC, earning first-team all-conference in the Panhandle Conference.

          Holden, a first-teamer,  averaged 15.3 points and second-teamer Owens 14.4. ...

          GMC's Kelley Bagarose is the GCAA softball player of the week. She hit . 667 with three homers, six runs, 9 RBI and two games. ...

          FPD grad Maggie Johnston had a solid Southern Conference outdoor track meet.

          She won the shot put for the third straight time and broke her own record with a mark of 51.40 meters /160-8 feet. Johnston also won the discus to earn the women's outstanding athlete award.

          Samford won the team title with 228 points. Mercer was sixth with 70 points.

          Titus Moore, another FPD grad, took second in the 110 hurdles, his :14.27 just behind teammate Emmanuel Tati's 14.15.

          Westfield alum Hugh Duggan of Samford won the outdoor pole vault, with a jump of 17 feet. ...

          Stratford grad Conner Corbitt became North Georgia's all-time home run leader over the weekend. The senior has belted 35 homers in four seasons, with three regular-season games left before the Peach Belt Conference tournament and the NCAA postseason. ...

          Cam Hill of Georgia College is the Peach Belt's freshman of the week for a record sixth time this season.

          He hit .364 against Columbus State with a homer and five RBI, and is seventh in the PBC in average and 10th in runs. ...

          Samantha Eustace of Mercer is the Southern Conference women's lacrosse coach of the year after the Bears went 8-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play, sharing the regular-season title.

          Audrey Robertson is the SoCon defensive player of the year and Hailey Rhatigan the top freshman.

          Both made the all-conference first team, with Catie Snee and Michaela Lucas the second team and Hannah Lind on the freshman team. ...

          Mercer's Ashton Wood and Michael O'Brien made the Southern Conference lacrosse all-conference second team, with Wood and Sean Goldsmith making the all-freshman team. ...

          Georgia College's Amber Coy (Houston County), Caroline Snider (Brentwood), Haley Howell, Rebecca Lawrence, Jessie Morris, Kayla Price, Sarah Couch, and Danielle Rubin were named to the Peach Belt Conference's softball all-academic team.

          They were joined by a few Central Georgia alums: Georgia Southwestern's Hayley Tierce (Houston County) and Augusta's Lydia Hausman (Thomaston/Flint River). ...

          The Bobcats signed signed A.J. James of Elbert County, having added Richard Crawford of Greenbrier last week. ...

          GMC JC has signed Jessica Hackney for women's soccer.

          Three Bulldogs have signed to compete at Martin Methodist in the Southern States Athletic Conference (home to Middle Georgia State).

          Gaby Kennedy, Adisa Nwawel, and Tabitha Hatem are headed to Martin Methodist.

          Kennedy was among the GCAA's top keepers, Nwawel started for two seasons and led the NJCAA in goals with 42 in 2017 (sixth with 36 in 2018). Hatem is also a two-year starter. ...

          Catching up: Rutland's Jordan Stephens signed with South Georgia Tech on Friday to play basketball.

 

Last week's Honor Roll

          Stratford alum John Mitchell is having a week.

          Mitchell was named USA South player of the week on Monday after big week batting .542 with a home run, 10 RBI, nine runs scored, and five steals in a 4-1 week.

          He's on an 11-game hitting streak, and owns a .475 average for April, helping the Scots qualify for the conference tournament.

          Among his 11 multi-hit games this season is a team-best three four-hit games.

          And then a few days later, he was named to the All-USA South all-conference second team with a career season.

          He's hitting .341 with three homers, 42 RBI and 21 steals, ranking fifth in the conference in RBI and tying for first in steals. He is currently tied for fourth in program history in RBI and tied for second in steals. ...

          Three Mercer women's golfers have resume updating to do after the Southern Conference announced honors.

          Rutland grad Carol Pyon made the all-freshman team, while Mary Janiga and Terese Romeo made the 10-woman all-conference team.

          Pyon averaged 76.16 strokes and won the weather-shortened Brickyard Classic. Janiga is a repeat performer, and Romeo averaged 73.36.

          Two Mercer men took all-conference honors, Stanton Schorr for the second straight year and Martin Plukka to the all-freshman team. ...

          Mackensie Poynter of GMC is the GCAA pitcher of the week.

          She went 2-0 with nine strikeouts and no walks in 14 innings, allowing two earned runs. ...

          Mercer's Kenlie Harvey is the Southern Conference softball player of the week.

          She went 3 for 5 at the plate in a split with Samford, including a two-run homer. Harvey is seventh in the conference with a .471 OBP and eighth with a .640 slugging percentage. ...

          Middle Georgia State's women's tennis team is up to No. 7 in the latest NAIA coach's poll. The men check in at No. 4.

          Several Veterans football players gathered for a signing ceremony Thursday.

          Parker Lee and Jacob Pierce signed with Mercer, and Sebastian Verger to Huntingdon College (current home for former Jones County quarterback Bradley Hunnicutt). ...

          A trio of Tattnall athletes signed Monday: Jamil Stanley (men's basketball) with Benedict, BJ Spears (baseball) with Gordon State College, and Breonna Glover (women's basketball) with LaGrange. ...

          CGTC's women signed Juanisha Black of Bryan County and the Fitzgerald duo of Hayleigh Ross and Sakendra Paulk of Fitzgerald for basketball for the 2019-20 season. ...

          Jones County's Colby Gordon signed Tuesday with Georgia Southwestern for baseball.
