It’s time for NCAA Regional baseball

          Three Division I college baseball teams from Georgia made the NCAA Regionals. Two are playing at home, and one isn’t far from home.

          Georgia welcomes Mercer, Florida State, and Florida Atlantic to Athens, while Georgia Tech hosts Auburn, Coastal Carolina, and Florida A&M.

          Area fans can keep an eye on Veterans’ Gabe Holt, leading Texas Tech into another host role. The Red Raiders open at 4 p.m. Friday (ESPN3) with Army at home in Lubbock, Florida and Dallas Baptist also in the regional. The Red Raiders are likely to be on a national network at some point in the regional.

Macon Bacon list roster, lose opener

          On the day of the season opener, the Macon Bacon posted this season’s roster, and again, it’s loaded with Central Georgia connections.

Perry grad and Georgia College standout Cal Gentry is back, and is joined by Bobcat teammates Forrest Wilson and Chris Rolick.

Middle Georgia State has four players on the roster, led by SSAC player of the year and conference scholar-athlete of the year Zach Cornell. Other Knights: Kyle Anderson and MJ Rookard, as well as Veterans grad Preston Sparks.

          GMC grad Cory Bivins, playing at North Greenville, is joined by former Tattnall standouts Cory Batholomew (West Georgia) and Logan Fink (Kennesaw State).

          Macon lost 4-3 at Savannah in Thursday’s season opener. Florence – which has Matt Blair of Mercer and Tattnall on the roster - visits Macon on Friday.

          Savannah brings West Laurens’ Bill LeRoy to Luther Williams on Saturday.

          Coastal Plain rosters are likely to start undergoing shakeups as college teams are eliminated from NCAA regionals, which begin Friday.
