Mercer officially gets transfer from Fairfield

          Fairfield transfer Neftali Alvarez joined Mercer on Thursday, submitting his paperwork on Wednesday to complete the transaction.

          Alvarez, a 6-2 guard from Cantano, P.R., has three years of eligibility remaining.

          Alvarez averaged 11.5 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 32 minutes a game, earning all-rookie team honors in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

          “Neftali has great speed and the ability to get to the rim, all while making those around him better when he is on the court,” Mercer head coach Greg Gary said in a release. “He’s a tremendous competitor and a great addition to our program.”

          Alvarez is the latest on the pipeline from Miami Christian in Florida to Mercer.

          New Mercer assistant Juan Cardona was Miami Christian’s head coach until joining the Bears. And Diego Rivera signed with Mercer earlier this week.

          Alvarez helped the Victors win two 5A-1A state championships, hitting the game-winning 3-pointer as a junior to win one.

          Alvarez averaged a double-double as a senior (27 points, 11 assists) en route to earning 5A-1A player of the year accolades.

          He also considered Wichita State, Dayton, and Arkansas state out of high school.

 

Washington County grad Coneway tops Mercer football honorees

          Outgoing senior Will Coneway was named the defensive player of the year for Mercer at the Bears’ year-end banquet Thursday.

          Coneway led the Bears with 94 tackles in 11 games, adding three quarterback hurries and 5.5 tackles for loss.

          He’ll be a redshirt senior next season, and is one of several Central Georgians on the 2019 roster so far:

          Linebacker Kashawn Baker of Crawford County, offensive linemen Colton Dingmore and Caleb Etheridge of Mary Persons, quarterback Dylan Fromm of Warner Robins, snapper Zach Lassiter of Bleckley County, offensive lineman Mitchell Lord of Washington County, wideout Brandon Mays of Wilkinson County, wideout Landon Miller of Rutland, kicker Brad Powell of FPD,
