FVSU hosting hoops tryouts

FVSU’s women’s basketball team is hosting open tryouts on April 28 at the HPE Arena from 2-4 p.m.
Candidates must arrive 30 minutes early. For all pertinent information, contact head coach Le’Coe Willingham at willinghaml@fvsu.edu.

Rutland grad Evans in all-star game

Former Rutland standout Ty’lik Evans has at least one more college game left, and it’s a pretty good one.
Evans, a senior at USC Aiken, is on the West team for the NABC Division II all-star game as part of the Division II Elite Eight this weekend in Evansville, Ind.
Evans is one of two Peach Belt players, joined by Brandon Parker of Francis Marion, who is on the East roster, along with West Georgia’s Marquill Smith.
Former Kennesaw State and Dalton State head coach Tony Ingle leads the West.
The game is Friday at 7 p.m.

Hoffman on the move?

It appears, and not surprisingly, that former Mercer men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman is moving from Macon.
Hoffman’s home in the Madison subdivision, just south of Barrington Hall on Zebulon Road, has been listed on various realtor websites for almost two weeks.
Realtor.com notes the value has increased 10 percent since the initial purchase in 2008. The asking price for the 14-year-old, 5,049-square feet home listed by Fickling & Co. is $550,000.
A few texts last week to Hoffman regarding the fifth-year anniversary of Mercer’s win over Duke were answered, but were politely short, one noting that he was out of town.
Conventional wisdom right after his firing was that he and his wife Kelli would head back to the Oklahoma-Texas region, and he’d likely land a nice job as an assistant with a quality high-level mid-major or with a power-7 program.
Hoffman’s entire non-Mercer career has been in that area of the country, in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. He and wife Kelli have family, including parents, in Oklahoma.
Hoffman coached at Oklahoma with current Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson. Former Mercer assistant Jason Eaker is head coach at Oklahoma Baptist, alma mater of Hoffman and Mercer president Bill Underwood.
There hasn’t been much employment action in that region, outside of Texas A&M and Arkansas firing head coaches.
Sampson’s name immediately was attached to the Arkansas job. Hoffman was head coach of the Arkansas Aeros in the ABA, which was located just north of Fayetteville, and is about 220 miles from Hoffman’s hometown of Oklahoma City.
