          All but two members of Southwest’s 1978-79 undefeated state and national title team hugged and talked and remembered on Saturday, feted at halftime of the Class 7A title game with a plaque and then basketballs to sign and keep.

Mercer men fall in Southern Conference tournament

          There were 11 lead changes before Furman eased ahead for an 85-74 win over Mercer in a quarterfinal.

          The Bears finish 11-20 in a frustrating season during which they lost 13 games by single digits, and seven by less than five points. Mercer has only two seniors, Jaylen Stowe and Cory Kilby. They had 29 points and 10 rebounds in their finales.

Rutland grad Evans, Georgia College pair on Peach Belt all-conference teams

          Ty’lik Evans, who helped Rutland to the state semifinals as a senior, is going out in style in college, which includes making first-team All-Peach Belt.

          The USC Aiken senior leads the PBC with 19.3 points a game and 3.9 steals, is sixth in minutes per game, fifth in offensive rebounds and assists,  20th in 3-point percentage.

          Georgia College’s Jordan Thomas made the second team and Isaac Thomas the third team.

CGTC takes GCAA Region 17 championship

          Southwest grad Aaron Ridley III had 12 points and a steal in the first half to help Central Georgia Tech get pas Georgia Highlands 75-65 in the GCAA Region 17 tournament championship game.

          The Titans again advance to the national tournament, and will find out Monday their seeding and opponent.

          Ridley finished with 16 points.

 

Northside adds to Hall of Fame

          Northside held its Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday, and inducted Matt Arthur, Sarah Braswell, Mike Davis, Edward Dyson III, Dr. Julian Harris, Donna Havrilla, Gerald Horne, Chris Johnson, Abry Jones, Marlys McMeans, and Conrad Nix.

          Arthur, Davis, Dyson, Johnson, Jones, and Nix represented athletics.

Peach Belt finals set

          North Georgia beat Clayton State 70-60 and Columbus State upset Lander in the women’s semifinals.

          Augusta topped UNC Pembroke 77-70 and USC Aiken popped Francis Marion 98-83 in the men’s semifinals, Rutland grad Ty’lik Evans scoring 24 points with five steals and seven assists.

          The championships are Sunday at 1 and 4 at Augusta.
