Georgia Tech, south Florida mourns
Only a few weeks ago, Bryce Gowdy was a happy Georgia Tech football signee, and Tech was even happier, Gowdy among the Yellow Jackets’ higher-rated recruits in recent years.
Monday, all involved were crushed when Gowdy, not long after expressing excitement in a Tweet at what was to come, apparently jumped in front of a freight train around 4 a.m. Monday.
His mother told his high school coach that he stepped in front of a train.
Shibbon Love win posted a Facebook video Monday afternoon addressing her son, the family’s situation, and some unusual comments from him leading up to his death.
The 17-year-old died at Broward Health North after the incident in Deerfield Beach, Fla., just north of Fort Lauderdale.
Gowdy signed with Tech a few weeks ago and was an early enrollee, meaning he was to be in class this semester and able to participate in spring practice. He was reportedly packing to move to Atlanta.
He was a two-way player and four-year varsity starter, earning a variety of all-area and all-state honors.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for his family. As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, it was within $1,000 of its goal of $25,000.
