Monday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
Georgia College to host PBC baseball tournament
Georgia College is used to being in the Peach Belt Conference baseball tournament, and used to winning it fairly often.
Now, the Bobcats finally get to host it.
Georgia College will get the chance to win it for the fifth time in eight years when John Kurtz Field welcomes the conference’s top eight teams May 10-12.
After 33 conference games, the top eight head to Milledgeville and the field named after the man who was 577-369-4 from 1976-93, including consecutive 50-win seasons in the mid-1980s.
Georgia College went 26-21 last year, and returns senior Cal Gentry of Perry, sophomore Trevor Evans of John Milledge, and welcomes sophomore Matt Blair of Tattnall by way of Mercer and junior Garrett Houston of Tattnall by way of Gordon State.

Ozzie Smith to headline Mercer’s First Pitch Classic
He’s probably – only probably – too old to do a back flip, but Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith is this year’s guest speaker for Mercer’s First Pitch Classic dinner.
It’ll be held Feb. 3 at Hawkins Arena, with an autograph session preceding dinner.
Smith follows the likes of John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, Pete Rose, Dale Murphy, Jose Canseco, and Darryl Strawberry, among others.
The 13-time Gold Glove winner was inducted into the Hall in 2002 after helping St. Louis to three World Series trips and the 1982 championship.
For more information, contact Mercer assistant Ian Humphrey at 478-301-2738 or firstpitchclassic@mercer.edu.
