Class 6A

Coffee (6-2/1-1) at Houston County (4-3/0-1)

          Houston County has lost seven straight in the series, covering four head coaches (Doug Johnson, George Collins, Greg Robinson, Von Lassiter, and Ryan Crawford). The last two have come by a combined 76-14. The Bears are facing their fourth ranked team in the last five games, including 3A No. 1 Peach County. A win is huge for a variety of reasons for the Bears, but most importantly in the postseason hunt.

Class 5A

Warner Robins (7-1/2-0) at Bainbridge (5-2/0-1)

          A Warner Robins win – repeating last year’s 38-0 romp is unlikely – puts the defending state champs into a third- or fourth-place playoff position. WR QB Jalen Addie is fifth in the state – among teams reporting stats to MaxPreps – in 5A with 1,383 yards on a 52.2-percent completion rate. Bainbridge’s Quayde Hawkins is 13th with 1,125.

Class 4A

West Laurens (6-1/2-0) at Mary Persons (4-3/2-0)

          Mary Persons has to defense maybe the most balanced and consistent team it has faced this year, and since last year’s playoffs. The Raiders can win through the air – with QB A.J. Mathis (1,425 yards, 62.8 percent) and WR Brent Carr (807 yards, 3 TDs) and on the ground – with Daniel Dorsey, Christian Covin, and Shonta Burney Jr. teaming for 1,108 yards and 13 TDs - and they can always win with defense. The Bulldogs – 52-14 winners last year - have done a solid job mixing and matching some things with a young team. A serious playoff atmosphere at The Pitt.

Class A

No. 16 Mount de Sales (7-0/3-0) at No. 25 FPD (4-3/3-0)

          Not since 1997 has Mount de Sales topped Stratford, Tattnall, and FPD in the same season. This is a playoff-for-a-playoff game for the Vikings, who need a win over a higher ranked team Friday and then in the crossover, and get some help to make the postseason. This has some potential for a shootout, and closer than last year’s 48-7 MdS win.

The Matchups

Class AA

No. 23 Hancock Central (4-3/3-1) at No. 27 Warren County (4-3/2-2)

          The Bulldogs won 30-8 last year at home, and they’ll ride Keveon Robbins (12th in Class A with 608 yards, and 0ff 105 yards and a TD in last week’s huge upset over Aquinas. Hancock Central has to have put that one in the filing cabinet, because Warren Central – a run-heavy team averaging 6.4 yards a carry - needs a win to keep postseason hopes alive. This game is likely to get chippy.

Lamar County (6-1/2-1) at Bremen (4-3/2-1)

          The Trojans had a week off after losing 46-7 to Callaway, a team that a week earlier survived Bremen 20-14. C.J. Allen, Cory Young, Malik Stewart and the Lamar County defense face a team that has scored 50-plus in two of the last four games, and the Trojans offense has to crack a defense that’s allowed only 97 points this season.

Putnam County (3-4/2-2) at Banks County (3-4/2-2)

          The War Eagles have won two straight since that wacky 74-57 loss to region co-leader Union County, and have given up 35 points the last two games after surrendering 129 – yeah, 129 – in the previous two. These two are in a three-way tie for third (with Elbert County), a game ahead of Oglethorpe County and Monticello.

Class 5A

Jones County (7-0/4-0) at Eagle's Landing (2-5/2-2)

          Eagle’s Landing wants to avoid a repeat of last year’s 42-7 loss.

Class 4A

Spalding (1-6/0-2) at Perry (4-3/2-0)

          The Panthers, who won 26-14 last year, are off their biggest region win since 27-0 over Howard in 2016, and best over a playoff-caliber team since 31-0 over West Laurens in 2012.

Howard (4-3/0-2) at Upson-Lee (2-5/0-2)

          The Knights popped the Huskies 38-24 last year in Macon. Both teams are just about in must-win territory.

Baldwin (2-6/1-1) at Burke County (7-1/2-0)

          Burke County has likely spent the week remembering last year’s 30-7 loss.

Class 3A

Peach County (6-1/3-0) at Central (2-6/2-2), Henderson

          The Trojans rolled 50-8.

Westside (4-3/2-1) at Kendrick (1-7/0-4)

          There was little suspense in Westside’s 37-0 win.

Class AA

East Laurens (1-6/0-3) at Dodge County (3-5/2-2)

          The Indians are 12-1 in the series, winning 49-22 last year.

Dublin (7-0/4-0) at Northeast (3-4/1-2), Thompson

          Dublin led 21-3 en route to a 35-3 win.

Washington County (5-2/2-1) at Southwest (2-5/0-3), Ed DeFore

          It was a four-point game into the fourth before Washington County pulled away 46-22.

Elbert County (3-4/2-2) at Monticello (1-6/1-3)

          The Hurricanes eye a better night than last year’s 47-8 loss.

Class A

No. 22 Schley County (4-3/3-1) at N. 47 Crawford County (2-5/1-3)

          Schley County rolled 63-7.

No. 21 Taylor County (4-3/2-2) at No. 36 Dooly County (2-5/2-2)

          Taylor County came up with a surprisingly severe 50-19 win over the ranked Bobcats.

No. 23 Hancock Central (4-3/3-1) at Warren County (4-3/2-2)

          A rivalry game, won 30-8 by Hancock Central.

No. 24 Macon County (4-3/3-1) at No. 43 Hawkinsville (1-6/1-3)

          The Bulldogs threw a 36-0 shutout.

No. 49 GMC (2-6/0-5) at No. 7 Lincoln County (5-2/3-1)

          Lincoln County won 28-14 on the road.

Central Fellowship (GAPPS, 6-3) at No. 28 Tattnall (3-4)

          These two teams haven’t played since 2007 – a 48-0 Trojans romp in GISA days - and a win does nothing for Tattnall’s postseason hopes.

No. 23 Stratford (2-5/1-2) at No. 34 Wilkinson County (1-6/1-2)

          It was a stunningly close 7-6 Stratford win at home.

Aucilla Christian (Fla.) at ACE (1-6)

          The locals fell 46-20.

GISA/GAPPS

Augusta Prep (0-7) at Westfield (2-7)

          The Hornets had a good first half en route to a 27-7 win.

Bethlehem Christian (1-6/1-0) at John Milledge (7-0)

          There was little stress for JMA in a 49-0 rout.

Memorial Day (1-7) at Gatewood (6-2)

          Gatewood was surprised 35-26.

Central Christian (GAPPS, 0-7) at Piedmont (2-4)

          The two didn’t play last year.

Briarwood (7-1/2-0) at Brentwood (6-2/1-0)

          Brentwood cruised 42-7 despite four turnovers.
