Duke 41, Georgia Tech 23

The Yellow Jackets watched the Blue Devils score on all five first-half possessions – aided by an interesting fourth-down decision by Tech – to turn the optimism of a 7-0 Yellow Jacket lead sour quickly.

Until then, everybody else in the FBS had scored a first-quarter touchdown except Tech.

Alas, the optimism faded fast, again, and the Jackets trailed 38-14 at the half.

Northside alum Tobias Oliver ran once for four yards, caught on e pass for 10 yards, and returned two kickoffs for 37 yards.

The Jackets were certainly in the game, outgaining Duke, albeit by only six and on the same number of plays, which doesn’t necessarily translate to a rout.

Kennesaw State 45, Charleston Southern 23

The Owls, ranked in the top 10 in the FCS, gave up 150 more yards than normal on the ground and allowed a 50-percent success rate on third downs along with being flagged 11 times for 122 yards.

And still was never not in control in the Big South opener.

          KSU (5-1, 1-0) ran for 342 yards.

The Owls came into the game first in total defense in the FCS with 230.4 points a game, and first with 369.8 rushing yards a game.

Georgia State 31, Coastal Carolina 21

The Panthers (4-2/2-1)  showed again that the Tennessee win wasn’t quite the earth-shaker it seemed, racking up 472 yards offense and 350 on the ground.

GSU led 31-13 in the third quarter.

QB Dan Ellington passed for 122 yards and ran for 127, accounting for three touchdowns.

Last week, GSU set a program mark with 340 rushing yards, topping it by 10.

The Panthers were better on defense than offense, surviving points-wise Coastal getting some short fields.
