Tuesday's Braves Report: Boston enjoys the night; Acuna honored; minor-league update; 3 days of observations

Another off night for Newcomb

Sean Newcomb didn’t make it through five innings and the Braves didn’t make it past a run in losing 5-1 to Boston to lose the series.

And again, the Braves offense didn’t help a pitcher through struggles. Steve Porcello struck out five with one walk and one run to improve to 16-7.

Newcomb and Co. walked nine, Newcomb’s five matching his season high in only 4.1 innings.

Rookie Kyle Wright, the fifth pick of the 2017 draft, threw two hitless innings in his debut.

Dansby Swanson left the game early after getting plunked in the second inning.

From beat writers Gabe Burns/Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mark Bowman/MLB.com, and David O’Brien/The Athletic on Twitter (and others when notable)

Kurt Suzuki is the Braves nominee for Roberto Clemente Award./GB

Ronald Acuña won NL Rookie of the Month, but was edged out by #Dodgers' Justin Turner for NL Player of Month. Both had remarkable months, couldn't disagree with either getting the award./DOB

Acuña is tied with Yankees' Andujar for the MLB rookie lead with 23 homers. Acuña has hit 23 in 86 games, Andujar in 127. Acuña leads rookies (min. 300 PAs) in slug% at .568 and is 2nd in OPS (.925)./DOB

The top of the second began with Camargo's leaping grab and ended with Markakis falling into the wall after jumping to grab Leon's fly ball. Pearce's infield single accounts for the only base runner produced against Newcomb, who seems to have confidence in his changeup tonight/MB

Newcomb escapes unscathed after sandwiching a double between two walks to load the bases with no outs in the fourth. But he extended this troubling trend: Best and Worst BB% vs. first batter faced in an inning (min. 68 IP entering tonight) per @InsideEdgeScout

Newcomb recorded a strike with 15 of the 36 pitches thrown after the start of the fourth./MB

Catching up

From Sunday

Snitker feels Wright and Wilson could provide 75 pitches if either needed to. But Toussaint was logical candidate for start (Monday)./GB

Acuña's 7th lead-off homer ties the franchise record./GB

Ronald Acuña Jr. has hit 10 home runs since Aug. 11. The Pirates have hit eight home runs since Aug. 11./Adam Berry, mlb.com

Adam Duvall now 4-for-39 with no RBIs as a Brave./GB

Braves have scored the winning run in their final-inning at-bats in each of the past 3 wins. Since Snitker took over as manager on May 17, 2016, they lead the majors with 53 such final at-bat wins./DOB

From Monday

The Braves active roster sits at 33, if you were wondering./GB

Acuna has a 14.39 AB/HR rate this season Best AB/HR in any rookie season: Judge 10.42, McGwire 11.37, Bellinger 12.31, Hamelin 13.00, Nokes 14.41 Best AB/HR rate produced by a Braves rookie: Berger 14.61, Williams 15.06, Justice 15.68, Carty 20.68, Mathews 21.12, Chipper 22.78/MB

40,394 at SunTrust Park. Sellout No. 16./GB

Expect to see Ender Inciarte in the lineup when the Braves next face a LH starter. Duvall has slashed .195/.274/.368 in 42 PA (2-for-20 w/ 1 BB, 5 K vs. LHP) since being acquired from the Reds./MB

I think #Braves' Acuña will win NL Player of the Month, but it's actually not a slam-dunk despite his stunning stats. Acuña: .355/.426/.757 (1.183 OPS) w/ 7 doubles, 12 homers, 22 RBIs. Justin Turner: .402/.491/.722 (1.213 OPS) w/ 11 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homers, 21 RBIs./DOB

Eovaldi has thrown 52 pitches through two scoreless. The immediate effect and lingering consequences would have been more significant a week ago, back when games were played without 11-man bullpens/MB

Since Kevin Gausman joined #Braves rotation Aug. 1, Atlanta has posted MLB's 5th-lowest starters ERA (2.84)/DOB

Toussaint entered the fifth with a no-hit bid and exited two outs later trailing 3-0. Nunez (left image) and Kinsler (right image) recorded consecutive one-out doubles against decent pitches. Vazquez doubled against a mediocre curve and Mookie chased Touki with a single/MB

Throwing error on Freeman to 2nd on fielder's choice, second time he's thrown high to second for an E in past few days. Bases loaded now with 2 out in Boston 8th/DOB

Braves have made at least one error in six consecutive games and allowed nine unearned runs in that span. This after making one error in the previous 11 games combined./DOB

Bogaerts 2-run double and it sounded like Fenway Park. Many Braves fans have left and all Red Sox fans are still here -- and there are at least 15-20,000 Sox fans here. Has to be./DOB

Braves lose, 8-2. They didn't make the most of their opportunities. The Red Sox did. If you want a bright side, Touki's first four innings were encouraging, and Philly lost. 76-61./GB

Odd and troubling stat of the day: #Braves fell to 5-11 in sold-out games this season at SunTrust Park including 1-9 in the past 10./DOB
