United take home the MLS Cup at a bonkers Benz

          It took Atlanta two years and 77 games to take the MLS Cup, the United getting a Josef Martinez goal in the first half and one from Franco Escobar in the second half to beat Portland 2-0 before more than 73,000 amped fans.

          The United sent outgoing coach Tata Martino to his new job with an impressive title in the team’s second year.

Quarterfinals again the end of Kennesaw State’s road

          The first class of signees when Kennesaw State started playing football had their season come to a stunning end with a 27-17 loss at home to South Dakota State in an FCS quarterfinal.

          It’s KSU’s second straight quarterfinal loss. The Owls had a 15-game home winning streak stopped as the senior class leaves with a 37-12 record.

          Quarterback Chandler Burks, the Big South offensive Player of the Year, left the game early in the second quarter with an elbow injury and didn’t return.

  

Valdosta State wins NCAA D-II semifinal

          A 21-point third quarter vaulted Valdosta State to a 30-24 win over Notre Dame College and back into its first NCAA Division II national title game since 2012.

          The Blazers have three Central Georgians on the roster: long snapper Pippin Davis of Lamar County, offensive lineman John Black of Peach County, and offensive lineman Jeremy King of Westside.
