          Mercer looks to take down some big game Tuesday when the Bears (4-6) visit Florida (5-4) in men’s basketball at 8 p.m. on the SEC Network.

          The Mercer women (5-5) are at Howard in Washington D.C. on Tuesday and then at George Washington on Friday.


Honor Roll

          Veterans baseball alum Gabe Holt has been named a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

          The Texas Tech sophomore made the second team after earning Freshman All-American honors last year with a .348 average, six homers and 44 RBI to go with 29 steals.

          Mercer's Le Bassett was named to the third team. The sophomore shortstop hit 17 homers and drove in 60 runs, batting .282. ...

          Dashai Almond, who graduated from Peach County after transferring from Lamar County, is the Conference USA women’s basketball freshman of the week.

          She took over at the point against No. 5 Mississippi State and scored 10 points for Southern Miss, with some career highs. She had four assists and two steals n a 66-47 win over Alcorn State, and has played 15 and 18 minutes in the last two games. …

          Former Peach County standout Darrell White of Middle Georgia State is the latest SSAC men's player of the week.

          The senior guard averaged 24 points, 4 assists, 3.5 steals, and 3 rebounds in two games, going 43 percent from the floor and 92 percent from the line. ...

          Mercer forward Amanda Thompson was the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week last week after averaging 14 points and 7.5 rebounds as the Bears went 1-1 on the week.

          She made a career-high nine field goals and scored 18 points, tying a career high, in a 57-56 loss to ACC foe Florida State on Dec. 5. Thompson added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the one-bucket home loss.

          She then scored 14 points and had seven rebounds in a 57-40 win over Charlotte.

          The preseason all-conference selection is third in the Southern with 7.4 rebounds, fourth with 2.3 steals, and 10th in scoring with 9.9 points. ...

          Bleckley County grad and Georgia softball signee Hannah Coulter recently graduated from Gordon State Magna Cum Laude.

          Westfield's Riley Hickok and Hatch Brannen signed recently, Hickok to play softball at Mercer and Brannen baseball at ABAC. ...

          The FVSU men's basketball team signed win Jahleel Roundtree of Burke County.

          The 6-7 Roundtree is a guard/forward who signed with the Wildcats in the early National Letter of Intent signing period recently.

          He is averaging about 18 points and 10 rebounds a game.

 Upcoming signings

          Bleckley County will hold a signing ceremony Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. for six athletes in four sports.

          Softball players Macey Haley and Abbey Sims will sign, with East Georgia and Emmanuel, respectively. Emmanuel will also get cross country runners Sarah Green and Jaylen Thigpen.

          Brooke Krieg will sign with Truett McConnell for golf and Zach Lassiter with Mercer for football.
