Marter, Phillips top the field at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at The Brickyard (final edition)

The nice weather couldn’t hold out.

The second round of the US. Amateur Qualifier at The Brickyard was stopped Tuesday at 4:20 p.m. when the rain came.

A little more than a dozen golfers had yet to complete the round.

When play resumed, first-round leader Ryan Marter tied with Trent Phillips – both are from South Carolina – for first with 139s, and were joined as qualifiers by Andy Ogletree of Little Rock at 140, Davis Shore of Brentwood, Tenn., and Grant Sutliff of Cumming at 141, and Trace Crowe of Auburn, Ala. at 142.

Marter is a rising sophomore at Wofford and Phillips will be a freshman at Georgia.

Sam Goldasich and Ben Fuller, both of Birmingham, are the first and second alternates, Goldasich at 142 and Fuller at 143. Crowe won a playoff over Goldasich for the final qualifying spot.

The U.S. Amateur Championship is Aug. 13-19 at Pebble Beach.

Wilson Andress, an FPD grad heading to Georgia Southern, shot a second straight even-par 72 for a 144, tying for 10th.

Jay Spivey finished with a 155, 11 over, as did Houston County grad and Troy signee Brent Hamm.
