Macon Tennis takes state 18-under intermediate state title

The Sports Report of Central Georgia

The Macon Tennis Association’s 18-under intermediate silver team didn’t lose a match and won just enough games to take home the USTA Junior Team Tennis state championship this weekend.

Macon, coached by FPD coach Derek Lashley, won 173 games and lost 74, just beating an Atlanta team.

The format is different, with total games being the determining factor as opposed to normal scoring.

In Sunday’s meeting with Central Savannah River, Macon won 28 games and lost 27, but went 2-3 in matches. Each match is the best of three, with four-game sets.

In the clinching matchup, Macon got a 4-0, 4-0 win from Noah Kilgore, and a 4-1, 4-2 doubles win from Thomas Johnson and Cole Wooten.

Macon lost only one set in the other matches without winning at least one game in the final.

Other members of the Macon team: Amaya Reece, Camden Lashey, Caroline Thrower, Sky Pope, and Kaleigh Isgett.

The Atlanta team – there were several in the tournament – went 37-15 in its finale, against East Metro. East Metro won in mixed doubles.

Six teams in different age groups from the Macon Tennis Association competed in the tournament, which had action at John Drew Smith Tennis Center, Stratford and Tattnall Tennis Center.

Competition included boys and girls, singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
