Luther Williams Field is undergoing all sorts of renovations and upgrades, and they’re expected to be ready for the Macon entry in the Coastal Plain League this summer.

The aged facility won’t, however, be the host for some of the GHSA’s baseball championships this year after all.

The GHSA announced Monday afternoon, not long after the conclusion of its executive committee meeting, that weather has slowed those renovations and Luther Williams won’t be ready in time.

So instead of playing on a field nearly a century old, the GHSA will play in one of the state’s newest baseball facilities, Mercer’s OrthoGeorgia Park.

The Bears are in their second season in the new facility, built on the same spot as Claude Smith Field. OrthoGeorgia Park doesn’t seat nearly as many as Luther Williams, but features all modern conveniences, among the top college playing surfaces in the country, and a location within a short walk of a dozen or so dining establishments.

The state finals, set for May 21-23, will also be played at Grayson Stadium in Savannah, State Mutual Stadium in Rome, and Foley Field in Athens. Who plays where will be determined after the playoffs start.
