Upson-Lee loses starter to weekend arrest, Smith won't play Saturday

Upson-Lee and its long winning streak have been a topic of conversation for nearly two years now, but people will be talking about a little more until the Knights take the floor Saturday in the Class AAAA boys title game at Georgia Tech.

The Knights’ preparation was set on its ear with the arrest Saturday night of starter Ja’Corey Smith and backups Rodney Raines and Otis Walker – along with a four teen, not on the team – in Thomaston for misdemeanor possession of mairjuana and criminal trespass.

The four were arrested after Thomaston police received a 911 call alerting the department to a vehicle on a dead-end road leading to Greatest Generation Park, north of downtown.

According to a story by Fox 5 in Atlanta, officers saw an object thrown from the car, and smell marijuana.

The story reported that a Thomaston-Upson spokeswoman said students are prohibited from school activites after an arrest until the completion of an investigation.

The spokeswoman also said all three would not play in Saturday’s  4 p.m. game.

Smith, a senior, averaged 6.7 points a game, with 3 rebounds, but had 14 points in last Saturday’s 52-51 semifinal win over Sandy Creek.

The roster and scorebook list a Javeon Walker, who, according to Maxpreps stats updated by the team, has played in 16 games but didn’t play Saturday. Raines has played sparingly.
