          Regardless of what happens in the next 161 games, Braves fans won't forget the opener for 2018.

  

College Baseball: Georgia keeps on rolling, tops Texas A&M       

       The Bulldogs won their eighth straight, dumping No. 15 Texas A&M 11-5 to improve to 20-6 overall and 6-1 in the SEC.

 

College Baseball: Mercer and ETSU to finish opener

          They almost got done Thursday, but major rain stopped the Mercer-ETSU game in Johnson City in the top of the ninth.

          Mercer has a 10-3 lead, and they'll resume the game Friday at 4:30 p.m. and then play the regularly schedule game. The finale is Saturday at 1 p.m.

 

Augusta Prep coach still in ICU in Macon

          Augusta Prep golf coach Chuck Mason, seriously hurt in an accident last week en route to a match in Perry, is progressing at the Medical Central Navicent Health.

          Bleckley County's Ellie Wortham has signed to play volleyball at Andrew College.

          Mercer pitcher Stella Preston is the Southern Conference student-athlete of the week. She has a 3.91 GPA, and went 2-0 last week with 11 innings, allowing just 5 hits for the Bears.

          Franziska Nobis of Middle Georgia State is the Southern States Athletic Conference women's tennis player of the week. She helped the 13th-ranked Knights beat No. 24 Reinhardt 6-3, winnng 6-0 and 7-6 in singles and 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

          She is the fifth MGSU tennis player honored this season. ...

          Middle Georgia State's Darrell White, a former standout at Peach County, was named NAIA All-American honorable mention recently. White averaged 16.3 points a game, shooting 48.1 percent from the foor and 80.3 from the line. He was also a first-team all-conference pick. ...

          Haley Tierce, a junior from Houston County, is the latest Peach Belt Conference softball player of the week. The infielder got hits in all eight of Georgia Southwestern's games, batting .429 with 5 homers and 13 RBI. She fanned only once in 28 at-bats. Tierce is tied for the league lead with 12 homers. ...

          Middle Georgia State's Madison Staniloiu is the Southern States Athletc Conference softball player of the week after batting .529 with 3 homers and 8 RBI.
