Mercer women don't have far to go or much scouting to do for NCAA Tournament opener

          Playing a perennial NCAA Tournament team was automatically going to be tough for Mercer, but the Bears got a break Monday night.

          They don't go far, and they know the opponent and the facility.

          Georgia Tech's women will keep playing, and start off doing so at home.

          The Yellow Jackets got a WNIT bid, and host Bethune-Cookman on Thursday.

 

Central Georgia Tech's men ready for national tournament

          Central Georgia Tech has a week to get ready for its debut on the national junior college basketball stage.

          The Titans found out around lunchtime Monday that they're the 21st seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament, and will play 12th-seed Connors State of Oklahoma.

          They'll play on Monday at 9:30 p.m. in Hutchinson, Kansas, with the winner facing Coffeyville on Wednesday.

          CGTC began competing in basketball in 2010-11.

 

Thad Motta comes to Athens to talk jobs, hoops

          Georgia isn't wasting time in replacing Mark Fox. Former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta was in Athens on Monday.

          Georgia College is up to No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll.

          The Bobcats are third among for PBC teams, behind No. 5 Columbus State and No. 6 Flagler.

          He went 9-for-12 with 11 RBI and 4 runs in three games against Francis Marion. ...

          Mercer's J.T. Thomas is one of three players from the state on the early Johnny Bench Award watch list, currently at 97 players, for the nation's top college catcher.

          He is joined by Joey Bart of Georgia Tech and Nick Gatewood of Georgia State.
