The weather looks like it will cooperate for what will be a lifetime day for the latest inductees to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
It’ll be nice and mild for the Saturday afternoon fan fest, and then for the social hour preceding the night-time dinner and induction at the Macon City Auditorium.
The festivities began Friday with the hall’s golf tournament at Idle Hour, and then the jacket presentation Friday night at the hall.
The FanFest is from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Hall, with the current class and many other Hall members on hand for autographs. Admission is free.
The pre-ceremony cocktail reception at the Macon City Auditorium starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner beginning around 6:30 p.m.
This year’s class: ex-UGA and NFL football player Champ Bailey, golfer Terri Moody Hancock, Georgia golf coach Chris Haack, track athlete Angelo Taylor, former Auburn football player Tracy Rocker, basketball player Kenny Walker of Crawford County, real estate developer and sports pioneer Tom Cousins, and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
Walker was the state’s top player in 1982, and went to Kentucky, where he was a four-time All-SEC pick en route to being the fifth overall pick of the 1986 draft, by the New York Knicks. He was with the Knicks until 1991, played in Europe, and returned to the NBA for a few years with Washington.
Kentucky went 102-30 in his four years at Kentucky, with a Final Four trip in 1983.
He’s the latest Central Georgia inductee, and joins coach J.B. Hawkins as hall members from Crawford County.
Tickets to the banquet may be purchased by calling the Hall of Fame offices at 478.752.1585. For more information, visit www.gshf.org or email gwena@gshf.org or jimm@gshf.org.
